THE MIDAS TOUCH

When it comes to skincare/makeup products there are items you splurge on and others you source from the drugstore; for example, I'd spend upwards of $60 on a foundation, but wouldn't dare spend more than $10 on a pressed powder. But in terms of haircare I've always found myself opting for mid-priced products; think Phyto, Good Day Hair Shop, and Bumble & Bumble. So when I was offered the opportunity to test out a personalized hair routine from Kérastase, a brand that I've been eyeing for years, you bet I jumped at the chance.

To determine what products would be part of my personalized regime I used the diagnostic tool, which can be found in the upper right hand corner of the site. After answering a few short questions it was determined that my personalized regime would consist of the Bain Elixir Ultime, Masque Elixir Ultime, and Elixir Ultime Imperial Tea. However, since I already use a customized shampoo made by Good Day Hair Shop for my specific hair colour, I opted for the Elixir Ultime Créme Fine and Serum Solide Elixir Ultime instead, completing a routine I've dubbed 'The Midas Touch'.

THE PRODUCTS

Acting as my introduction to the brand the Masque Elixir Ultime came into play during my at-home 'spa" routine this past Sunday evening and did not disappoint. Containing the brands legendary Oleo-Complexe, a blend of four oils including maize, pracaxi, camellia and argan, this supremely rich mask softens and adds incredible shine – although the shine might have something to do with the micro-shimmer packed into this golden cream.

I had my doubts that I would notice a difference after using this mask compared to the others I've tried, but was hopeful given it's price point, and it definitely did not disappoint. I only needed an extremely small amount to fully drench my locks and only left it on my hair for a mere 3 minutes before washing it out. I could instantly tell that there was a difference in the texture and feel of my hair; not only could I run a brush through it without hitting a single knot, my hair didn't seem to have any build-up of product, which was surprising for a cream as rich as this.

Before grabbing the blow-dryer I reached for the Elixir Ultime Créme Fine and the Elixir Ultime Imperial Tea, applying a mixture of the two to the ends of my damp hair. The Elixir Ultime Créme Fine is part hair serum and part leave-in conditioner, and like the Masque Elixir Ultime it contain loads of micro-shimmer to increase shine. It also has UV protection so that your hair color is protected from the sun. Like I said I pair this cream with two pumps of the Elixir Ultime Imperial Tea, which is a spin-off of the must-have Elixir Ultime. The Elixir Ultime Imperial Tea features Imperial Tea Extract, said to be good for colour-treated hair, and a scent inspired by Chanel's Coco Mademoiselle. This oil can be used in a number of ways, including a pre-shampoo treatment, however I prefer to use it as a leave-in conditioner, mixed with the Creme Fine Elixir Ultime, or as a pick-me-up between washed. The only upsetting thing about these products is realizing that they contain silicone, and therefore provide more of a superficial fix than a true treatment.

Finally, I've been carrying the Serum Solide Elixir Ultime in my purse at all times to tame any hair woes that might pop up while I'm out and about. The Serum Solide, is as you would expect, a solid serum, which smooths waves, softens crunchy ends, and adds shine. Although It appears to be a white pomade the texture is oily to the touch, which I suppose is to be expected considering it contains sunflower-seed, olive, coconut, and avocado oils. The serum makes light work of stray hairs, crunchy ends, and gives your hair a fresh feel. Unlike many serums, you can't oversaturate your hair in oil with this one given it's soild form - making it a must for those who tend to over do it. The people at Kérastase are basically protecting you from yourself.

Overall I would definitely recommend Kérastase products to those who have yet to try. If anything at least treat yourself to one of their luxurious masks – you won't be left disappointed.
